There is considerable overlap between counselling and psychotherapy, and both can provide meaningful therapeutic support.
Counselling may focus more immediately on current difficulties, decisions, coping or particular life circumstances. Psychotherapy can involve deeper or longer-term exploration of recurring emotional, behavioural and relational patterns, identity and earlier experiences, with the aim of developing greater understanding and creating opportunities for meaningful change.
I describe myself as both a counsellor and psychotherapist because both reflect aspects of the work I do.
